56cm Sam HIllborne needs a good home.

If you’ve been thinking about a Sam in the most popular mid-size range, here’s one to consider.

484A6450It’s unusual for us to have used bikes for sale.  When we do, it’s because they are something special, and this 56cm Sam Hillborne by Rivendell fits the bill.

484A6444

484A6437We sold this bike just under three years ago, and it has found it’s way back to us from the original owner virtually unridden.  I can’t imagine how that might happen, but it has.

484A6449The build is nicer than “usual” in a number of ways.  It has an upgraded Da Vinci triple crank and bottom bracket.  It also sports a super strong wheel set with Velocity Dyad rims, DT Swiss DB SS spokes and Shimano XT hubs.  Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 700×35 tires.

484A6447In back is a 9 speed 11-32 cassette with a triple in front to tackle any terrain. SKS Longboard fenders and a Tubus Racktime rear rack make for a versatile machine with, or without, a load in most any conditions.

A super comfortable upright riding position with Brooks B17 Imperial saddle, a Nitto Dirt Drop stem, Albatross bars and Dura Ace shifters on Paul Thumbies complete the cockpit.

484A6451 484A6453 484A6452

From commuting and grocery getting, to casual riding and long range touring, this bike can do it all.  Priced ~$500 below what it would cost to build new, at $2650, it’s worth a look.  Because the bike is in such fabulous condition, we are selling it with our standard new bike warranty.  This includes 6 months of free service and adjustments as well as a free warranty check-up/tune-up at the end of the 6 month period (or earlier).

For more information, call us at 617-244-1040, email me/Elton, or stop in for a look and a test ride.

New Raleigh Bikes at the Harris Cyclery

It is a great time to buy a new bicycle! Right now we’ve got a good selection of 2015 models on sale, and we are already receiving new stock of 2016 bicycles!

First up the Raleigh Redux 1:

Rush2This stylish but aggressive ride is ready to become your ultimate commuter. Featuring a 1×8 speed drive train, wide double wall rims and Schwalbe Big Ben 27.5 x 2.0 tires, the Redux can handle a variety of terrain and conditions.  The frame is made to accommodate fenders or pannier racks.  And a wide range of tire sizes can be utilized.  If you are looking for a versatile bike, that can be ridden throughout the year, then the Raleigh Redux is the bicycle for you!

At Harris Cyclery we have always been big fans of single-speed and fixed gear bicycles.  So we decided for 2016 to test out some cool new models.  Check out the Raleigh Rush Hour:

RushSimple, elegant and tons of fun this classic is great for zipping around the city and cruising on the esplanade.  It’s a flip/flop, so just flip the rear-wheel around and ride fixed (or single speed and coast)!

And then there’s the Raleigh Tripper! If you love skid-stops this is the bike for you.  It’s a single speed shod with 700cx35 tires and an old-skool coaster brake. The Tripper is a comfortable ride that can handle gravel and dirt as well as the mean streets of Boston.

Raleigh-16_Tripper_DkSilverYellow

Finally a different type of hybrid, the Raleigh Harlan. It’s an internally geared 3-speed with a super comfortable upright ride that is well suited for dirt roads and gravel.  Mechanical disc brakes give the Harlan excellent control in different conditions while still being comfortable on the country back roads.

Bike events

It has been great fun, this fall, to attend a number of local bike events.  Gathering with like-minded bike geeks, builders, riders and suppliers makes these events something I look forward to with great anticipation, and truly enjoy.  Catching up on product news, personal events, and general schmoozing is all part of the deal.

It all started with the Brompton US Championship in Richmond, VA, in September.  The race was scheduled to coincide with the UCI World Road Championships – 9 days of elite racing events with riders from around the world.  A 10-mile road course was laid out downtown and Richmond was bursting at the seams with riders, support staff and fans from around the world.  The Brompton event is both a race and a party, with awards given for the fastest male and female riders, teams, veteran riders, and best dressed male and female (the rules require formal wear with no visible spandex, with liberal interpretations).  I rode with my lovely wife Deborah, who won the prize for best dressed female.  The prize was a matching red Brompton Game Bag.  Woot!

IMG_0629Regular readers know of our passion for Bromptons.  There is a community and culture unlike any other centered around these fabulous folding bikes.  What else can you ride in red heels on cobbles. . . in the rain. . . after dark. . .  and enjoy it?!

Next up was the New England Bike Builder’s Ball in Providence.  Like the Brompton US Championship, it was part of a multi-day race event.  This time it was the KMC Cyclocross Festival in Roger Williams Park.  Independent bike builders, manufacturers and suppliers had booths, and the place was packed.  There was also beer and food trucks.  What more can you ask for?!!

Brian Chapman's tandem and trailer was a show highlight.

Brian Chapman’s tandem and trailer at the Builder’s Ball was amazing.

Two of our customers were at the Builder’s Ball for the first time as vendors.  Anton, of Velo-Lumino, was there with his marvelous retro-looking tail lights and TMAT stem switch.  And David of Sinewave Cycles was showing his Revolution and Reactor USB chargers.  Their tables were crowded each time I wandered by, which was good to see. Good luck, guys!

Many familiar faces from previous years as well as many new ones!

French Fender Day 2015 had familiar faces as well as many new ones!

Peter Weigle’s French Fender Day is one that I most look forward to all year long.  The year was bigger and better than ever, and the weather could not have been better.  Nowhere else are so many extraordinary classic and current bikes in one place set up for close examination, comparison, discussion, and riding.  I’ve posted a few shots here.

Thanks, Peter, can’t wait ’till next year!

Next up, the Philly Bike Expo!  Over the past few years under the leadership of Bina Bilenky Trahan and her dad, Steven, it has become a major east coast event.  Make it if you can, you’ll be glad you did!  I’ll report back. . .

Rivet Saddles

IMG_0609We are thrilled to have just received our first shipment of Rivet Saddles! These superb hand-crafted saddles offer excellent support and comfort whether you are riding around town or doing a 750 mile brevet.

I/Elton have been putting miles on a cro-moly Pearl for a couple of weeks now and am lovin’ it.  My preferred saddles have always been leather and the Rivet is right at the top of my favorites list.  It’s been comfortable from the get-go and just keeps getting better.  I’m looking forward to riding next year’s brevets on it!

Currently in-stock we have both the Independence and the Pearl saddles with cro-moly rails in either black or chestnut. These are priced at $200 and $150 respectively.

All the saddles come with Rivet Cycle Works’ 1-year “Mad Cow Guarantee” and are already water-proofed.

Check out this review from Lovely Bicycle!
